It’s Time to Break Fashion’s Oldest Rule

You might say we first fell in love with white leather when we laid eyes on Sloane Peterson’s fringed jacket in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The coolest movie girlfriend in history looked (at the time) so stylish in her jacket, shorts, and knee-high boots. Currently, our white leather obsession is focused on sleek modern pieces, feminine details, and utilitarian wearablity.

However, Jennifer Hudson, 32, went against the rule and succeeded in nailing it perfectly by showing both her legs and cleavage at the 2013 Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas on Friday.

Some of the season’s best uses of winter white were shown on the Fall/Winter 2014 runway and are currently being worn by the style savvy this season. Derek Lam’s collection featured a pair of winter white wide-leg trousers with oversized utilitarian pockets and a cozy white sweater topped with a twisted wrap over the sleeves. Proenza Schouler also followed the trend, sporting a textured oversized coat layered over a buttoned dress. These designs are just a few of the many that set the precedent for how to wear wintertime whites, and they prove summer is not the only season for the striking shade.
